ITANAGAR: The Dera Natung Government College (DNGC) here, in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology (APSCS&T), on Thursday observed National Mathematics Day, to commemorate the 135th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a man who knew infinity.

The programme was organized in two sessions including the inaugural and technical session.College Principal Dr M Q Khan appealed to the students to love Mathematics while expressing his concern on shortage of Mathematics teachers in the state.

He informed that even seats in Mathematics and Physics during the college admission always go unfilled due to lack of interest amongst the students to study the said subjects. Dr Khan lauded the genius of Srinivasa Ramanujan and called him a great mathematical genius.

Coordinator of the programme, Dr K K Rai, who is also the head of mathematics in the college, deliberated on how National Mathematics Day came to its existence and further spoke on the topic 'Indian contribution in the world of mathematics'.

Speaking on the occasion, executive engineer of Itanagar Smart City Development Corporation Ltd Sonkoli Sonam, repeated the old adage that Mathematics is mother of all subjects.

"As theories of Physics cannot be proved without Mathematical equations likewise, engineering and all other subjects rely on Mathematics," he said and requested the students not to have a mathematics-phobia. He also spoke on the topic 'Mathematics in everyday life'.

Deputy Director of APSCS&T informed that the day is being celebrated in the all parts of the nation and how his department has collaborated with various educational institutions like NERIST, RGU, RGGP in the past. Capital DC Talo Potom jibed about misuse of mathematical calculations. He assured to extend all possible help to the mathematics department of DNGC in its various endeavours to make mathematics popular subject in the society.

The DC further appealed to the brilliant minds to be in the teaching field to make society better. Earlier, the organizer conducted various competition amongst the school and college students like essay writing, painting, story-telling etc.
