Dr BD Mishra visits Mawlynnong cleanest village in Asia

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brigadier (Retired) Dr B D Mishra on Friday visited Mawlynnong village in Meghalaya accompanied by his wife Neelam Mishra.

Mawlynnong village was awarded with the 'cleanest village in Asia' title by Discover India in 2003.

A champion of Swachh Bharat Mission in the State, the Governor, who is on an official tour to Meghalaya for attending the 69th Plenary of North East Council, visited the village and interacted with the inhabitants and officials.

He felicitated them for being the proud residents of Asia's cleanest village.

Dr Mishra was impressed by the cent per cent literacy rate of the villagers and the highly progressive role of the village women to showcase their village as an acme of neatness. He has suggested to the Arunachal Pradesh government to provide an opportunity to tour the Mawlynnong Village and see itself.

The Governor said that achievements of the women of the village by keeping their village the cleanest, the socio-economic conditions of the people have enhanced.

"Tourism and sale of local handicrafts have increased and many houses are earning well from Home Stay arrangements. This is the benefit of the village folk being individually and collectively responsible and conscious towards area cleanliness and hygiene," he added.
