ITANAGAR: Former MP and Arunachal Pradesh minister Takam Sanjoy strongly condemned China’s repeated attempts to rename locations within the state, calling such actions arbitrary, unethical, and deeply offensive to the people’s identity and history. Speaking out on Friday, the senior Congress leader questioned the Chinese government’s authority to interfere in India’s internal matters, particularly by attempting to undermine longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations. Sanjoy, who previously served as a Lok Sabha MP and whose email account was hacked by Chinese operatives during his tenure, criticised the recent renaming of 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh by China. He described these imposed names as ‘unethical, humiliating, and arbitrary artificial nomenclatures’ that have no connection to the genealogy or cultural heritage of the indigenous communities of the region. He lauded the Centre for its historical efforts in integrating the tribal populations of Arunachal Pradesh into the democratic and administrative framework of the nation. Sanjoy highlighted milestones such as the application of the Chin Hills Act of 1896 and the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 during British rule, and later, the transfer of administration from the Ministry of External Affairs to the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1965. Sanjoy questioned the legitimacy of China’s actions, asking whether the Chinese government has ever enacted any laws to benefit the people of Arunachal Pradesh. “If the Indian Parliament has passed laws to uplift and integrate our people, why should anyone else be envious or interfere?” he asked, asserting that the people of Arunachal have proven themselves to be loyal citizens of India whose identity cannot be challenged by any foreign power.
