Group of like-minded youths comprising artists and environmentalists organized a peaceful demonstration here on Friday at the Wall of Harmony, Civil Secretariat to protest against the construction of dams in Arunachal Pradesh.

During their demonstration, youths distributed pamphlets to create awareness of the impacts of dams on Nature and to the human race.

Speaking to the media, Bhanu Tatak, an artist, stated that their motive is not to create any hostility but to register their protest and to create awareness amongst the people about how these dams are going to impact the environment as well as human existence.

She also disclosed that different groups of artists and environmentalists not only from Arunachal, but also from Assam and other parts of the country have joined the movement to show their protest against the dams in Arunachal.

"The art over the wall of harmony sketched by artist Neelim Mahanta and activist Ebo Mili is not to dishonor any artist, but is an effort to send a message against construction of dams in Arunachal," she added.

She said that the artist has only painted in the portion of the 'Dam', whereas 90 per cent of the wall is as it was.

"Our demand of the Government is to study the health impact on the communities posed by the construction of dams and diversion of rivers. The natural hazard risk assessment, a discussion on the socio-cultural disintegration due to dams and their displacement, cumulative environmental impact assessment of dam-building across Arunachal, especially in Dibang valley, including impacts on the downstream of Assam," she said.
