Itanagar: The Joy of Reading campaign was organized this week at Hunli covering local schools by the VKV Alumni group of Dibang Valley district jointly with the local administration and the Lohit Youth Library Network, creating a new surge in reading enthusiasm among the students and teachers of this remote hilly pocket. The campaign covered drawing and painting contests, storytelling in Hindi and Idu Mishmi languages, and a skit contest in Idu Mishmi language on the empowerment of girl children to build up a progressive society.

Its special feature was the training sessions by the reader-activists of Dibang Youth Library, Roing through reading theatre and poem recitation sessions in KGBV Hunli and Government Model Upper Primary School, Elope where a small exhibition of books for students and teachers was also organized.

Giving away the prizes to student-winners in the campaign, Hunli SDO S Minin lauded the VKV Alumni group members for sparing and sharing their time to the reading-deprived rural students and hoped other officials and teachers would follow their model.

The SDO also handed over a Book Box of Rs 10,000 each to KGBV Hunli and Govt Model UPS, Elope, sponsored by one Rupa Mimi, a former student of Hunli Middle school. Noting that each Book Box contains a hand-picked collection of reader friendly books from reputed publishers, Minin appreciated Mimi for her concern for her village brethren.

Lohit Youth Library Network coordinator S Mundayoor also spoke on the occasion and hoped that administration would follow up this campaign with more activities.
