ITANAGAR: A two-member team from the Lohit Youth Library Network from Wakro in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, led by Bahailu Rangmang, represented the Mishmi Kaman language of the state at the “Language Carnival” hosted by IIT Gandhinagar to mark the International Mother Language Day on Tuesday. The carnival was organized by the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) of IIT Gandhinagar, wherein, apart from Mishmi Kaman, colourful exhibits from 11 scheduled languages of India were on display.

The library team exhibited introductory posters on Arunachal, the Mishmi society, the children’s biography of Gandhiji in five Arunachal languages (by Tulika Books, Chennai), “Hambreelmai Sai,” the first children’s book in Kaman language and the Mishmi Kaman Grammar booklet prepared by linguists Roger Blench and Sokhep Kri. Many visitors were also curious to know more about the teaching of Arunachali languages in schools after seeing “Kaman Pit-1,” a text book published by the Arunachal education department, as a communiqué informed here on Wednesday.

Several students, research scholars, and faculty members of IIT visited the Kaman stall, seeking details about Arunachal, its people, and its languages. Professor Jooyoung Kim, linguist, and Professor Ambika Aiyadurai, social anthropologist, congratulated the Lohit Youth Library team for their elegant presentation. The coordinator of Lohit Youth Libraries thanked the LDI team and the IIT-GN Director for providing them with an invaluable opportunity to benefit from the numerous programmes currently going on in the institute.
