ITANAGAR: Police in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh solved various motor vehicle theft cases, registered in 2022 and a few this year, with the arrest of four persons involved and recovering 26 stolen bikes from various parts of the state.

As many as 18 motor vehicle theft cases were registered in the district last year and three more registered since January this year, which remained clueless, Namsai SP Dr. D.W. Thongon informed on Sunday.

Thongon constituted a special investigation team led by SDPO Chera Saban with inspectors Tabin Padung and A.K. Pandey, sub inspectors B. Kathak, C.S. Kamhoo and T. Ponglaham and assistant sub inspector R. Noroh as members.

The team, started working under the supervision of SP, interrogated past history sheeters, visited all two-wheeler garages in the district and neighbouring state of Assam but did not find any clue.

However, one more MV theft case was reported at Namsai police station on February 21. CCTV footage during its investigation saw involvement of two persons. But, the seized footage was not so clear. But various sources were engaged based on the physical appearance of the persons that helped in identifying the accused and launching a man-hunt for them.

With all out efforts, one Ripunjoy Duwara (27) of Bojal Toli village in Assam's Tinsukia, district was pinned down and arrested from Tinsukia with the help of Assam Police, who later revealed the other co-accused.

One person seen in the CCTV footage was identified as Babul Buragohain (35) of Gumtibeel in Sadiya, who was found with another accused Sanjit Shakti (32) of Mahedevpur under Namsai district.

Both were arrested while they were trying to flee, the SP said. It was revealed that the duo had stolen one bike the previous night which was later recovered by the police.

Another person Girin Sakia (37) from Namsai, a co-accused seen in CCTV footage with Babul Buragohain, was also arrested from his residence. After detailed interrogation, all accused admitted to their involvement in various MV theft cases which led to recovery of 26 bikes from various parts of eastern Arunachal. The stolen motorcycles were traced as per their disclosure statement, the SP added.
