ITANAGAR: Former minister Bida Taku appealed to the state government for immediate bail of all detainees in connection with the recent 72-hour state-wide shutdown, or face ‘Mass Jail Bharo Andolan’, at a press conference at the Press Club here on Tuesday.

“I appeal to the state government for unconditional release of all detainees who were detained from May 8 to May 13 in connection to 72-hour bandh, and booked under Section-3 of the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act-2014 (APUAPA)”, Taku said.

“People of the state will launch ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ if the state government fails to fulfill the demand at the earliest,” he added.

“The APUAPA -2014 is a dangerous act as it allows the authorities to book any individual under section of the act and to keep him behind bars for 6 months”, he said while alleging the state government of misusing the Act by suppressing one’s fundamental rights with the help of the Act. Taku claimed that some detainees were being treated as terrorists inside the prison by the authorities and some were detained on May 13 after the bandh ended. He informed that Save Arunachal Youth Association (SAYA) president Likha Rajnik and his inmate are under hunger strike since May 13. Rajnik and his inmate were detained and booked even though they were not involved in the bandh call.
