ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW), led by its Chairperson Kenjum Pakam, participated in a day-long legal awareness program organised by the All Tangsa Women Welfare Society (ATWWS) in collaboration with the Changlang district administration at Nampong.

Sponsored by APSCW, the program was held on Saturday and aimed at empowering women with knowledge about their rights and legal safeguards.

Addressing the gathering, Pakam emphasised the importance of promoting self-help groups (SHGs) for economic independence, urging collective efforts to uplift women socially and financially. She stressed that even small acts of kindness can create a significant impact, encouraging women to connect with One Stop Centers (OSC), local NGOs, and stakeholders to achieve P3 - protection, preservation, and promotion.

Highlighting the significance of the POCSO Act, she cited the Vishakha guidelines as an example of how structured legal frameworks can bring about positive change. She remarked that if such guidelines could be established by the Supreme Court to ensure women’s safety at workplaces, society too can work towards greater growth and security for women.

L Thungon in his deliberations lauded the efforts of ATWWS in driving social change, particularly in tackling drug abuse, which has led to a notable decline in substance abuse cases. He urged the public to collaborate with stakeholders to eradicate the drug menace, warning that failure to do so would endanger the future of upcoming generations.

He further highlighted the availability of resources that, if streamlined, could open avenues for cross-border trade and economic growth.

Thungon acknowledged the contributions of the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ARSLM) in providing SHGs with a platform to sustain their livelihoods, especially in remote areas.

Other key speakers included Nabam Yahi (TAD), who elaborated on the role and functions of APSCW and spoke on domestic violence, Banner Tangha, CA (OSC), who explained the importance of One Stop Centers, and Rucha Kimhun, CW (OSC) Changlang, who addressed issues related to domestic violence and sexual harassment.

The officer-in-charge of Nampong police station also spoke on various women-related concerns. More than 300 participants benefited from the awareness program, marking a significant step toward legal literacy and women’s empowerment.
