TAMENGLONG: To mark the death anniversary of the 'Father of the Nation' and pay homage to the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country's Independence, the 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 sectors AR/IGAR (East) celebrated 'Shaheed Diwas' on Saturday. Remembering Mahatma Gandhi on this occasion who led the nation non violently to attain Independence and inspired numerous other movements for civil rights and freedom around the world, the Commandant led the public of Tamenglong to pay floral tributes to the Mahatma and other martyrs of the nation. People from different walks of life paid their homage at Jadonang Park in Tamenglong.

Bapu's favourite bhajans filled the atmosphere with patriotism. The unit organised the first-of-its-kind 10-km mini marathon for the public of Tamenglong.

The enthusiastic youths were flagged off by the Commandant to spread the message of unity, peace and non violence as professed by the 'Father of the Nation'. The locals along with security force personnel rubbed shoulders with each other to foster bonds of friendship and brotherhood.

The participants were urged to take up running for improving physical and mental health. Cash prizes and medals were given away to the first three position holders in both the boys and girls categories. Meingan and KC Kakhunguiliu stood first in the boys and girls categories respectively.

Later, the locals joined the unit jawans in observing two-minute silence in the memory of the martyrs, stated a release.
