Three Militant Hideouts Busted, 33 Cadres Apprehended In Changlang

BORDUMSA: In a massive and disastrous blow to the NSCN (R) faction of the Naga rebel group proactive in the Changlang district of eastern Arunachal, joint security forces of the district police and 13 Assam Rifles and personnel of the Dao Division of Indian Army stationed at Jairampur and Changlang busted several hideouts and temporary shelters of the outfit in the run-up to the Independence Day, informed Changlang Superintendent of Police Romil Banniya during an exclusive interview with The Sentinel at his Changlang official residence here.

“In the last one week, three camps of NSCN (R) at New Jukhi, Old Kamlao and Kovin Honkap were traced and destroyed while the ongoing operations in the rough topography in last six months bore the desirable fruits leading to the apprehension of 33 cadres of the banned millitant organisation which includes several key NSCN cadres including self-styled captain Wangjin Pantha, self-styled captain Soltin, and Rajapio Wangdi who were active since 2009,” said the SP, adding, “Six suspected Myanmarese were also held recently during the operations.

“In order to foil the objectives of the outfits including sabotage activities and extortion and drug peddling in the run-up to the Independence Day, six camps of underground outfits amidst impregnable bushes, difficult terrain in the worst-hit militant pockets of Changlang, old Jukhi, Magantong, Jongram, old Kamlao, new Jukhi and Kovin Honkap were destroyed beside recovering edible items, utensils, camouflage dress and other war like stores of the rebels in last 48 hours.”

When asked about the vulnerability of the busted temporary hideout camps, the Sp informed, “For securing the camp, trenches were dug around it to take cover during exchange of fire. Round- the-clock camp security duty is given by cadres in rotation. Bunkers are created to take cover in case of grenade attacks. Fire for cooking food is created by jungle wood.”

Underground training camps of National Socialist Council of Naga, Khaplang faction were also busted earlier following the recovery of AK series weapons and other logistic dumps of the militants.

The two demolished camps — one each at Jongrom and Laibong villages of Changlang District along the India-Myanmar border — also had trenches and militant sentry posts. The camps had accommodation for more than 40 cadres, and were used for imparting training and also as temporary camps for the cadres.

Meanwhile when asked about the eminent threat of several militant organisations of the NE calling for boycott of the Independence Day celebrations, SP Banniya said that security agencies have adequately beefed up security vigilance and also stepped up round-the-clock patrolling, nakas and mobile check-posts have been erected across the district beside intensifying the counter-insurgency operations to thwart the subversive designs of the ultras.
