Itanagar: In a bid to uphold consumer rights and ensure compliance with trade regulations, the legal metrology and consumer affairs department (Eastern Zone) conducted a surprise inspection in Khonsa market in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, on Wednesday. The inspection was led by deputy controller C S Singpho, who is in charge of the Lohit district, and was carried out in the presence of town magistrate Noklem Wangjen, who is also the extra assistant commissioner of Khonsa. During the operation, seven trading units were found using unverified weights, measures, and weighing instruments in commercial transactions, an offence under Section 24 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. Additionally, six other trading units were booked under Section 18(1) of the same Act for selling packaged commodities without mandatory declarations. These included the absence of critical consumer information such as maximum retail price (MRP), net weight, name and address of the manufacturer or packer, and the date of manufacturing or packing. The violations were deemed to be in contravention of both the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
