14 rescued vultures, one eagle released in Rani area

PALASBARI: In the Jorashal Reserve forest under East Kamrup Forest Division, 14 injured vultures and one eagle were released in the open sky at the initiative of the Vulture Breeding and Conservation Centre in the Rani area on Thursday.

More than 100 vultures were found dead and many critical at Milanpur under Chhaygaon constituency on March 17. The forest department and locals suspected that they died due to food poisoning after eating goat carcasses. The death of the vultures alarmed the conscious circle of people.

"Happy to announce that 14 vultures and 1 steppe eagle rescued on 17th March and sent to Vulture Conservation & Breeding Centre for treatment were released back to the wild by Kamrup West Division," the Assam Forest Department tweeted on Thursday morning.

Researcher Dr Sasin Rana Dey left the vultures in the open sky one by one in the presence of Kulsi Ranger Dweepan Deka and Rani Ranger Jayant Goswami.
