SILCHAR: In a massive operation, Assam police arrested 16 persons in the three districts of the Barak Valley for illegal sale and storage of beef. 9 persons were arrested in Cachar and altogether 24 kgs of beef were recovered from six places, confirmed the SSP, Numal Mahatta. Similarly in Hailakandi, the district police raided a number of shops and arrested five persons while three more persons were apprehended from Hailakandi.

Mahatta said that based on credible information, the Cachar police raided six eateries in Silchar Sadar, Borkhola, Udharbond, Kalain Dholai, and Lakhipur and seized beef, both raw and cooked. All the six eateries were sealed accordingly.

In Hailakandi, the police arrested five persons who were allegedly selling beef within a 5 km-radius of Hindu temples. Out of the five arrested persons, three were from Katlicherra and one each from Lala and Algapur.

In Sribhumi, the district police raided places in Nilambazar and Badarpur and recovered beef. A hotelier was arrested in Nilambazar while two others were apprehended for illegally selling beef.
