18 dead and over 4 lakh affected as flood wreaks havoc across Assam

Guwahati: 2 more were killed in the Assam floods within the last 24 hours, taking the toll of the deceased spiking upwards to 18. The two latest casualties have been reported from Goalpara district.

At the same time, a total of 4,62,777 people across 1,289 villages in as many as 21 districts have been affected in the floods the pre-monsoon floods that have wreaked havoc across the state said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ADSMA) in its daily bulletin.

The flood-affected districts have been identified as Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Udalguri, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia.

At the same time, 19,496 people in 8 districts have been driven home due to the onslaught of the floods, and are taking shelter in 132 relief camps that have been opened by the Government.

The deluge has also wreaked havoc on agricultural lands, as 37,313 hectares of land have been submerged underneath floodwaters. Although no animals have been washed away within 24 hours, lakhs have been affected by the incessant rains and flood. Boats have also been deployed by rescue personnel, who rescued 261 marooned persons in the Dhemaji and Bongaigaon districts.

Several embankments across the districts of Sivasagar, Baksa, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Morigaon, Udalguri, and Nalbari have been breached. Massive damage to roads and infrastructure has also been reported from several districts in the state, and urban floods have begun to take shape in Baksa and Dibrugarh districts.

In Kaziranga, 78 out of the 183 camps have been affected and 2 camps have been vacated. A hog deer and a python who were drowning, have been rescued by the personnel.

Meanwhile, landslides have been reported from the 3 districts of Kamrup (M), Dima Hasao, and Kamrup (R). In Dima Hasao's Boro Haflong, 3 houses were damaged and 13 people have been affected. In Guwahati, a fresh landslide was reported at the Raj Bhawan which necessitated the vacating of the nearby Barthakur Clinic and Hospital.
