KOKRAJHAR: The 3rd triennial conference of UPPL got underway from Friday at Jougalu Fwthar in Kokrajhar. Party sources informed that over 6,000 delegates have registered till evening on Friday.

As part of the programme, MCLA Saikhong Basumatary opened the main gate while Swrmanga BIP guest house and delegate hall were inaugurated by MCLA Sanjay Swargiary and EM Ukhil Mashahary. The main stage was inaugurated by MLA Jiron Basumatary while EM Dhananjay Basumatary inaugurated the Amaosara dining hall. The delegate session was inaugurated by minister UG Brahma while youth delegate session was inaugurated by Raju Kr. Narzary, general secretary of UPPL.

Talking to The Sentinel, the Rajya Sabha MP and working president of the UPPL, Rwngwra Narzary said the party came into being in 2015 seeking alternative force to BPF. He said people of the region witnessed political division between the BPF and BPPF led by Hagrama Mohilary and Rabiram Narzary respectively. The BPF ran the BTC for 17 years without any opposition as there was no situation to speak or stand against the BPF for which no party dared to come to contest, he said, adding that the massive anti-incumbency factors of BPF pushed the people to seek alternative political force to counter the BPF's wrong doings. He said the UPPL became stronger with public support in the region. He also said the aims and objective of UPPL were to root out the corruption and misrule of BPF and the party took up the reins of BTC in the 2020 BTC election. He also said the UPPL had become as a potential regional party in Assam as it has eight legislators in the State and a Rajya Sabha MP.

When asked about the BJP's mission to capture political power of 6th schedule and other autonomous councils of Assam one after another, Narzary said it was true that national political powers try to capture political power in every state or region but it was also a fact that the national parties were not in a position to go ahead alone without the support of regional parties and the same thing could be seen in BTC too where UPPL and AGP were allies of the State Government. He further said UPPL had become the people's party and it would go ahead with people's support.

Replying to questions he said the UPPL-led BTC government was just going to complete two years in December but in this short period the UPPL had fulfilled their poll promises to people one after another.
