Dibrugarh: In an unfortunate incident, five members of the same family lost their lives to fire in the wee hours of Saturday near Dibrugarh Thermal, Niz Kodomoni.

As per sources, the deceased – Maya Devi (56), Vishal Sonar (22), Shibu Sonar (5), Shankar Sonar (3) and Nono Sonar (aged person) – were fast asleep in their house when a fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. Although the fire fighters were pressed into action, they could not save any of the five members. It is suspected that none of them could make an escape as their house was locked from outside.

It has been learnt that it was an everyday practice for Krishna Bahadur Sonar, Maya Devi’s husband, who works as a night watchman with the Thermal department, to lock the house from outside before leaving for work. Their son, Rajesh Sonar, who is into commercial driving, was also out due to work when three houses were left gutted by the inferno.

Taking swift note of the sorry development, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the incident in which five members of a family died in a cylinder explosion at Kadamani in Dibrugarh district on Saturday. He asked the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner to carry out the inquiry in to the incident.

Sonowal also asked the DC to extend all help to the affected people and announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased.
