TEZPUR: The 55th death anniversary of Natasurya Phani Sarma was observed on Thursday under the aegis of the Sonitpur district administration. A solemn Shraddhanjali programme was organized at the Natasurya Phani Sarma Samadhi Kshetra, Kalibari, Tezpur, the revered site near his residence.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of lamps by his eldest son Ajit Sharma, Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava, and District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, marking the beginning of the homage and remembrance event.

The occasion was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including District Development Commissioner Lakhinandan Saharia, Additional District Commissioner-cum-CDC Dhekiajuli Dyotibha Bora, additional district commissioners Twahir Alam and Kamal Baruah, Assistant Commissioner Iris Arman Ahmed, Vice-Chairperson of AMTRON  Ritu Baran Sarmah, Chairman of Tezpur Development Authority Bishwadeb Bhattacharya, social worker Madhusmita Hazarika Deka, along with other notable personalities.

Addressing the gathering, District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das paid a heartfelt tribute and reflected on the indelible legacy of Natasurya Phani Sarma. Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava recalled inspiring anecdotes from Sarma’s remarkable life and contribution to the world of drama and culture. Tributes were also offered by District Development Commissioner Lakhinandan Saharia and Ban Theatre General Secretary Jitumoni Dev Choudhury.

The programme concluded on a poignant note with acclaimed actor Bhupen Sharma and Natasurya’s grandson, emerging theatre artist Navjyoti Sharma, performing iconic dialogues from Phani Sarma’s timeless plays ‘Siraj’ and ‘Kiyo,’ bringing alive the enduring spirit of his theatrical genius.
