A tribute to Rasamay Dutta

Rasamay Dutta, a trade union leader, social worker, an advocate of Gauhati High Court expired on August 13 at a private hospital in Guwahati due to cardiac arrest. Late Dutta was born on April 1, 1932 at Naharpur in the district of Karimganj Assam. He lost his father at the age of 4 who was a post master during British Period. His mother had to struggle much to bring him up under extreme poverty as there was no provision of family pension in those days. Late Dutta had his early education at Sri Gauri school and passed matric examination with 1st division under Calcutta University. At the age of 18 he came to Gauhati in the search of his livelihood and somehow managed a job in the veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department under Govt. of Assam. Late Dutta had a zeal for education and he was admitted at B Borooah College, Gauhati in the night shift and passed intermediate and thereafter BA under Gauhati University. During college days he proved himself as an active sports man for which he was honoured by the college authority.

After passing BA he joined in the Indian Railway at Maligaon and retired as Deputy Chief Commercial Superintendent. While serving in the Railway he joined in the Gauhati University Law College and passed LL.B in the year 1960. In the year 1990 he retired from Railway service and joined in the Gauhati High Court Bar Association and started practise as an advocate in the Gauhati High Court and Central Administrative Tribunal. Generally he used to take up cases of deprived Railway employees. He Joined in the Trade Union as a founder member of the Mazdoor Union and served as secretary of the Mazdoor Union N.F.Rly. He had the privilege to participate in many all India Conference of Railway employees representing Mazdoor Union. During all India strike he was detained and taken into custody along with other leaders for participating in the strike.

He was a man of principle and discipline, honesty and never deviated from it. He never compromised with any injustice of the employees in spite of many temptations from the administration and threat to transfer also could not deter him from the path of trade Union. His constant struggles on the behalf of the Mazdoor Union, the All India Railway Authority was compelled to bring out many beneficiaries scheme for the welfare of the Railway employees. He was always in favour of local recruitment and to establish Recruitment Centre at Guwahati.

His death news brought a pale of gloom amongst the activists of the Mazdoor Union and many of his well wishers rushed to his house to pay homage to their dear leader. His funeral was largely attended, Late Dutta was 88 and survived by two daughters. His wife predeceased him. Late Dutta wrote several articles relating to Trade Union which have been published in many journals His death was condoled by many circles at Maligaon. On the occasion of adhya shradha I pay my homage to his departed soul.
