A Tribute to Tushar Kanti Maitra

Tushar Kanti Maitra, a distinguished lawyer of Tezpur Bar left for his heavenly abode on October 31 at Tezpur Medical College (Hospital) due to COVID-19. The death news of Maitra was unexpected and shocking and a large number of people from all walks of life gathered before his house to pay last homage to their departed well-wisher and friend.

Maitra was born in Tezpur and had his education, at Bengali Boys English School and later he joined Darrang College and after graduation he left for Kolkata and joined University Law College and completed B.L. Degree.

Maitra returned to Tezpur and joined Tezpur Bar in 1965 and started his practice under the noted civil lawyer of Assam Bhupen Dey and Sudhir Bagehi.

Within short passage of time Maitra was able to establish himself as a distinguished lawyer. During his long practice of 56 years at Tezpur Bar, he served as GP of Assam for a brief period of time, he also served as a Penal Lawyer of State Bank of India, Mahabhairav Co-operative Bank and many other local institutions.

He had extended his practice in many areas of Arunachal Pradesh especially for civil disputes. He was known as an encyclopedia of civil jurisprudence.

Maitra was given ovation by Tezpur Bar in completion of 50 years of his illustrious practice. Maitra was a 5th generation advocate from his family and his great grandfather Shyamacharan Maitra was the first lawyer of the Tezpur Bar who joined in the year 1859.

The heritage of the Library of Maitra was so rich that it is having collection of books since 1859.

Tushar Maitra always used to help the poor and down-trodden who used to approach him for help and he used to encourage the young generation of lawyers not to run after the money but to learn the law which will help them in later stage.

COVID has been particularly cruel to the Tezpur Bar. Apart from snatching several loved and admired members of bar, the departure was bereft of goodbyes. The departure of Tushar Da has created a vacuum in Bar which will never be filled by anyone.

Late Maitra was 83 years old and survived by his wife and a son. Today on the occasion of the 'Addyashraddha,' I pay my homage to his departed soul.
