Goalpara: The Goalpara unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lodged FIR against each other following fracas between the two student bodies on Tuesday night around 7:30 pm in the AASU office that left six injured from both sides. The injured students from AASU are Suroj Das, Shanku Saha, Pranjit Nath, Pallavi Nath and Ripunjoy Kalita. On the other hand, Manab Sarkar from ABVP sustained grievous injury with multi cuts around the eyes.

According to Bedanta Kashyap, town unit president of AASU, the ABVP group had attacked their office unprovoked. “Manab Sarkar, Rajiv Orang, Mandeep Hazarika and Raju Dey along with many others, had gathered before the AASU office in front of Goalpara College and began shouting abusive and communal words, besides pelting stones. Some of them were intoxicated also. As a result, we sustained injuries. But when their words became more abusive, people from around the area tried to prevent them, during which one Manab Sarkar was injured,” he said.

On the other hand, Rajiv Orang of ABVP said, “We were preparing for a State-wide demonstration on Wednesday and were having discussion among ourselves in front of the Goalpara College gate when the AASU members attacked us suddenly. We never went to attack AASU office.”

Meanwhile, police have initiated an investigation. “We have received complaints from both the organizations and begun investigation,” said a police officer. The tension between the two organizations grew few days back when AASU approached the Principal of Goalpara College demanding action against two teachers, Hemanta Kalita and Dhananjoy Medhi, who are holding ABVP posts. An ABVP member alleged, “These are all part of a nasty political game designed by a vested interest politician who is aiming at the coming assembly election and trying to reap benefit by creating tussle between the student groups.”
