AASU observes Swahid Divas in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Along with the other parts of the State, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) observed Swahid Divas on Thursday to commemorate the martyrs of the Assam Anti-Foreigners Movement. Notably, on this very day in 1979 at Barpeta, Khargeswar Talukdar, the 22-year-old general secretary of Barpeta AASU unit, was beaten to death and thrown into a ditch next to the highway at Bhabanipur by security personnel while leading a protest programme. Khargeswar Talukdar was honoured as the first martyr of the Assam Movement.

To commemorate the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement, the North Lakhimpur regional unit of AASU organized a day-long programme at the Swahid Bedi premises of the town. The programme began with the unfurling of organizational flag by president Pranjit Gogoi. The family members of martyrs Dharmakanta Dutta, Abala Das, oppression victims Jugal Das, Bogamol Dutta, Kamaleswar Konwar and Sweet Sing Doley lit the earthen lamps.

Nam-prasanga was also organized on the occasion to pray for the eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs. It was followed by a public commemoration programme wherein AASU State executive member Dhanmoni Dutta, district unit adviser Sanjib Konwar and other dignitaries took part. In the evening, the AASU activists lit earthen lamps at the Swahid Bedis of the district.

JAMUGURIHAT: The Sootea unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) observed Swahid Divas with a day-long programme at the Swahid Bedi in front of the Bhaskarjyoti Vidyapeeth. Bhaskar Jyoti Budagohain, president of Sootea unit of AASU, hoisted the flag which was followed by paying rich tribute to the martyrs. Nine persons from the greater Sootea area lost their lives during the Assam Movement. The family members of the martyrs, members of AASU Sootea unit and teachers of Bhaskarjyoti Vidyapeeth offered floral tributes.
