DOOMDOOMA: The Doomdooma Municipal Board (DMB) unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU), in a memorandum addressed to the health minister of Assam, demanded the establishment of a blood bank at the Doomdooma 30 Bedded FRU hospital.

In the memorandum dated January 6, 2025, sent to the State Health Minister through the Doomdooma Co-District Commissioner, AASU, DMB unit President Biraj Alam and Secretary Ankit Tewari stated that Doomdooma FRU caters to the needs of around 45 tea gardens belonging to the big tea companies besides hundreds of small tea growers and gardens and 700 revenue villages around it.

As Doomdooma FRU hospital was established primarily to look after the mother and child health care of the area, the patients run the risk of inadequate blood supply in the operative cases like caesarean and child delivery as the hospital has no facility of blood bank even after more than two decades of its establishment. For want of a blood bank, the attendants have to move from pillar to post in search of blood donors in emergency cases. Pretty often even the non- serious cases are referred either to Tinsukia Civil hospital or to Assam Media College & Hospital, Dibrugarh for want of a blood bank.

Although Tinsukia Medical College has come up at Makum, it is functioning on primary dependence on Tinsukia Civil Hospital as most of its departments are yet to be functional for lack of adequate numbers of doctors and medical staff.
