ABMSU Hails Two-Child Norm But Pitches for Ensuring Education

Kokrajhar: The All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) on Thursday hailed the two-child norm initiated by the Government of Assam but the union pitched for ensuring education to all.

In a press meet held at Kokrajhar Press Club, the president of the ABMSU, Abu Sayed Anchari said the move of the Government of Assam for two-child norms to check population explosion was praiseworthy but the government should focus on education for all underprivileged. He also said the policy of curbing population explosion should not be targeted towards a particular community and the policy should not just be confined to job punishment but there should be clear objectives.

Anchari said the Government of Assam had taken up the measure to allot land to landless indigenous people of Assam with three bighas to each family but there was no clarity over the allotment of land to landless minority people. He said there were many minority people who had been allotted PMAY houses but most of them were landless people. He demanded that the government should ensure financial assistance to landless minority families who had been allotted PMAY houses but had no land. He, however, questioned as to whom the government was referring to as ‘indigenous’ people of Assam.

The student leader said altogether 855 people sacrificed their lives in the Assam Agitation and people from the minority community were also part of it. He said there should be an impartial view in implementing the policy. On the performance of Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Sarania, Anchari said they were monitoring it and warned that Sarania should stay away from dragging the minority community for his political benefit.
