ABSU expresses resentment over decision to abolish 8,000 regular vacant posts

KOKRAJHAR: The decision for abolishing 8,000 regular vacant posts in elementary education will destroy the very spirit of the vernacular medium, hamper the teaching-learning process and will close the way for permanent recruitment against vacant positions. The ABSU on Tuesday appealed to reconsider the matter and to stop abolishing regular vacant posts in Bodo medium schools in BTR and Assam.

In a statement, ABSU president Dipen Boro said the letter from the Secretary to the Government of Assam Dr Bijoya Choudhury to the Accountant General, Assam for abolishing of 8,000 sanctioned vacant posts of regular teachers (4,285 posts of lower primary schools and 3,715 posts of upper primary schools) under the Directorate of Elementary Education, Assam, will destroy the spirit of the vernacular medium like Bodo, Assamese, Bengali etc.

He said, ABSU never wanted the decision of abolishing regular posts and demanded to reconsider the matter and to stop abolishing regular vacant posts in Bodo medium schools in BTR and Assam. He said as many Bodo medium schools were running with a single teacher and zero teacher, without science and maths teacher, this decision will make the situation more critical, for which most of the schools will be compelled to close. He also said it will close the way for new recruitment against permanent vacant posts. He, however, demanded to fill up all regular vacant posts in Bodo medium at the earliest instead of abolishing the posts.

Boro said mere saving and making financial neutrality will not be the wise decision. It is the duty and responsibility of the government to survive and sustain vernacular medium schools in true spirit, he said adding that ABSU will send a special letter to Chief Minister of Assam and Education Minister to withdraw the decision.
