LAKHIMPUR: Various academic institutions of Lakhimpur district observed the International Women’s Day on Wednesday by organizing different programmes.

The Women’s Cells of the Panigaon OPD College and Telahi Tuwaram Nath College jointly celebrated the event at Telahi Tuwaram Nath College. The agenda of the programme began with a chorus song presented by the students of the host college. It was inaugurated by social worker Manorama Goswami. The programme was chaired by Hiramai Chutia, the president of the Women’s Cell, Telahi Tuwaram Nath College.

Laying stress on this year’s theme of the International Women’s Day, that is, ‘DigitAll: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’, TTN College Assistant Professor Bidyut Hazarika, former student Manika Doley, OPD College Vice-Principal Karuna Dutta, Associate Professor Banti Bhuyan Saikia delivered lecture in the programme as resource person. The programme was held under the management of Gunada Nath, the secretary of Women’s Cell, TTN College.

On the other hand, Lakhimpur Commerce College observed the International Women’s Day in North Lakhimpur with calls to allow women to have their rights equally. A meeting was organized for that occasion by the Women’s Cell of the college and the NSS unit which was inaugurated by Dr Premananda Howborah, retired professor of Lakhimpur Girls’ College and it was chaired by Dr Lohit Hazariuka, the Principal of Lakhimpur Commerce College. The objective of the meeting was explained by Dr Manju Mani Saikia, Convener of the Women’s Cell of the college.

The meeting began with a solo violin performance by Dr Sikha Moni Borgohain, Professor of Economics, followed by a song by Himadree Deka of the college office staff. Songs were also performed by Dr Arupa Dutta, Professor of Education, Dr. Harini Patowary Das, Professor of English and Jyotishmita Borah of Economics. Mridushmita Hazarika, Professor of Assamese read five micro-short stories of her own at that function. A poem was recited by Dr Biva Dutta of the Assamese Department. Retired Vice-Principal of Lakhimpur Girls’ College, Dr Banti Howborah attended the meeting as the resource person. She spoke about the evolution and events which led up the observance of International Women’s Day. She appropriated the importance of the day in the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of India since the ancient times and urged everyone to carry forward the message of equality to the rural masses.
