LAKHIMPUR: A prominent academician of Lakhimpur district, Nilima Lahon was no more. She breathed her last on Tuesday night around 11:00 pm at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh due to old-age ailments. She was 78.

She was the permanent resident of Ward No. 4 of North Lakhimpur town and wife of former Lakhimpur MLA, Lekhan Lahon. Born in a cultured family in 1944 to Kashinath Baruah and Bhubaneswari Phukan Baruah, Nilima Lahon was cultural activist and actress. She was one of the women pioneers of Lakhimpur, who paved the way for women in co-acting in amateur dramas and theatres. She had the opportunity of acting with Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Natasurya Phani Sarmah, the two apostles of the Assamese cultural and literary fiels, in the social drama named Chiraj.

Then she started her service life as teacher and contributed a lot to North Lakhimpur as an academic activist. She retired as principal of Lakhimpur Academy Higher Secondary School. After retirement, she was wholeheartedly involved in social service and Lakhimpur District Senior Citizens' Association. She extended remarkable contribution to the Senior Citizens' Association in its progress and in building the official infrastructure of the organization. She also shouldered the designation of chairperson of Lakhimpur Development Authority and rendered noteworthy services to successfully implement various developmental projects in North Lakhimpur. She was also a popular lyricist and article writer, whose articles were published in various magazines and journals published from Guwahati and other places of the State.

She is survived by two daughters and a host of relatives. Various organizations, institutions and individuals of Lakhimpur expressed grief at her demise and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul while extending their sympathy to the bereaved family.
