Adulterated fuel: Petrol depot sealed in Lakhimpur district

Responding to allegations regarding evidence of adulterated fuel, Lakhimpur district administration has sealed a petrol depot and sent the samples of the fuel for forensic test.

LAKHIMPUR: Responding to allegations regarding evidence of adulterated fuel, Lakhimpur district administration has sealed a petrol depot and sent the samples of the fuel for forensic test.

The petrol depot is RR Petrol Depot, widely known as Eveready Petrol Depot, located in North Lakhimpur town. As per report, hundreds of people who filled their vehicles with fuel available in the said petrol depot on Wednesday, experienced non-performance of engine with various technical defects. Later in the evening, the victim customers, one by one, assembled in the petrol depot premises with their complaints. In the preliminary investigation, the victim customers allegedly found mixture of water in the petrol sold in the petrol depot, which led to a tense situation there.

On receiving the information, police personnel from North Lakhimpur Police Station and Supply Department officials arrived at the spot. The Supply Department officials collected samples of the fuel available in the petrol depot in the presence of police personnel and managed to send the samples for forensic test. Later, the district administration sealed the petrol depot.

Regarding the issue, the victim vehicle owners, various organizations of the district expressed strong reaction on Thursday. In this connection, the Lakhimpur Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Hindu Youth Council, Tribal Youth League, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association submitted memoranda to the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur demanding him to keep the petrol depot sealed until the forensic test report is declared and made public.

The organizations also demanded the Deputy Commissioner to take steps to make the petrol depot owner bear the repairing costs of the damaged vehicles of all victim customers. Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Unemployed Association demanded the Deputy Commissioner to launch a magisterial enquiry into the fuel adulteration issue.
