GUWAHATI: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA of Bhabanipur constituency, Phanidhar Talukdar is likely to join BJP on August 21.

According to reports, the AIUDF MLA who earlier denied joining the saffron party will follow the same footsteps of two Congress MLAs Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain who recently joined BJP.

On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Talukdar contacted him several times and showed his willingness to join the party by the last week of August.

Bhabanipur Assembly falls under the newly-created Bajali district of Assam and shares a border with neighboring country Bhutan.

While talking to the media Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita in July told the media that Phanidhar Talukdar would join the BJP towards the end of next month.

Meanwhile, just after joining the saffron party, Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain resigned from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Borgohain has also sent his resignation letter to APCC President Bhupen Borah via email and also submitted a hard copy of the letter.

Thowra Congress workers protested in Demow Rajiv Bhavan on Sunday evening by burning his posters. On Monday, near Demow in Nitaipukhuri, Nahat, Sukanpukhuri and a total of 21 mandal Congress committees and also145 primary Congress committees burnt the effigy of Sushanta Borgohain. Former MLA Pranati Phukan went to Pachim Panidehing, Panidehing, Teteliguri and Nitaipukhuri on Monday to interact with the grassroots Congress workers.

Before joining the BJP, Borgohain met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at his residence in Dispur. Later addressing the media, CM Sarma said, "We welcome Borgohain to the party." Along with Borgohain, a number of party workers also joined the BJP. Incidentally, he had resigned from the Congress and also as an MLA on Saturday.
