The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have ramped up their joint election campaign across five Gaon Panchayats in the Jalukbari Legislative Assembly Constituency, with the stated goal of securing a record margin of victory for Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The coordinated push follows the recent delimitation of assembly constituencies, which has reshaped the electoral geography of western Guwahati.
Following delimitation, eight Gaon Panchayats from the erstwhile West Guwahati constituency have been reorganised — five now fall under Jalukbari and three under Palasbari.
Of the 16 Guwahati Municipal Corporation wards previously in the region, five have been absorbed into Jalukbari, while the remaining eleven now form part of the newly created Central Guwahati constituency.
In line with the NDA alliance strategy, AGP — once the dominant political force in this belt — has thrown its full weight behind BJP candidates and is actively campaigning for them.
Joint election offices and booth-level campaign centres have been set up in the five panchayats of Majirgaon, Garal, Dharapur, Azara, and Kahikuchi. West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, leading the AGP effort in Jalukbari, visited these offices on Monday, meeting workers from both parties and reviewing campaign preparations.
Kalita urged party workers to engage proactively with voters and ensure maximum turnout on polling day, stressing the importance of coordinated grassroots outreach.
The campaign coordination builds on a meeting held at the Chief Minister's official residence in Dispur on March 25, attended by Dr Sarma, MLA Kalita, and over 500 AGP workers from the five panchayats.
At that meeting, Dr Sarma underlined the strategic importance of the AGP-BJP alliance, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have consistently backed its continuation. He acknowledged that without AGP's support, the BJP would find it difficult to form a government in Assam independently, given the significant overlap in the two parties' voter bases.
AGP workers present at the meeting pledged to carry out door-to-door campaigning in support of the Chief Minister.
MLA Kalita also acknowledged the BJP's support in his own victories in 2016 and 2021, affirming that AGP would reciprocate by working wholeheartedly for Dr Sarma's win in Jalukbari.
The joint campaign has also spread to the neighbouring Palasbari constituency, where AGP units from Rani, Uttar Bholagaon, and Dakshin Bholagaon have begun campaigning for BJP candidate Himanshu Shekhar Baishya.
MLA Kalita, along with former minister Dr Kamala Kalita, has participated in several Palasbari campaign meetings alongside BJP leaders including Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika.
