SILCHAR: Agriculture Minister Atul Bora who was in the valley on official as well as election campaign for AGP, hit the nail right at Algapur assembly constituency of Hailakandi where addressing a crowded rally of AGP, now in alliance with BJP, he revived the legacy of Shahidul Alam Chowdhuy, MLA and Minister in Mahanta ministry and also a foster father of the party in Barak Valley. Since 1985, the year when AASU turned AGP leaders floated the party to contest elections and made passage for the citadel of power at Dispur.

Algapur was tuned into a bastion of AGP until the death of the great mentor Shahidul Alam Chowdhury in November, 2012. It was Shahidul Alam who wielded strong influence over the people of his constituency and in political circles. It was he who was behind the victory of AGP candidate Sirajul Islam Laskar from Kaimganj (North) in 1991. His political wit and wisdom as well as accessible to all sections of people could make ground for the party in Barak Valley. Shahidul remained invincible in his constituency till his last days of politics. And after that, the AGP candidate in the by- election held in February 2012, Kamrul Islam Choudhury polled less than 1000 votes. That was a blow to Sahidul Alam Choudhury's dream and ambitious plan to expand AGP in the valley.

Thereafter, Algapur switched into the fold of Congress and now AIUDF. Atul Bora timed well to whip up the emotions and sentiments of the crowded public meet at Algapur on Thursday by recalling the mission and vision of Shahidul Alam Choudhury who did a lot of development works for his constituency and made it different to boast of. The Congress and AIUDF have nothing to offer except to add to their power and pelf, calling them 'unfriendly' and 'unhelpful' to minorities. The AGP Minister played to the gallery with his hard hitting words on Congress and AIUDF and asked, 'What these parties did for Algapur. Your leader of the masses worked with single agenda of welfare of people.'

The AGP president found the crowd quite responsive to further reminding them how Shahidul Alam was above 'communal politics' liked by Hindus as well and that single factor led to his success in all elections that he contested, keeping Congress, BJP and AIUDF at a bay. It will be interesting to watch if Algapur will be given to AGP in seat sharing agreement and BJP leaders and workers work hand in hand to campaign for the alliance party. Atul Bora knew as a seasoned politician the more he was critical of the adversaries, the more would boost up the prospect of AGP.

It was not only the scathing attack on Congress and AIUDF, but also the comparative politics that did seem to work on the mindset of the audience to remember the 'unforgettable leader' of AGP. Atul Bora spoke of the desperation of AIUDF Chief Badaruddin Ajmal to fall back on Congress to beat BJP-AGP alliance, now stronger than ever. At the end, Atul Bora was a happy leader to play his winning card well.
