LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur District committee of All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO) on Saturday initiated a protest programme in North Lakhimpur opposing the Cabinet decision taken to implement the National Education Policy - 2020 (NEP-2020).

In this regard, the activists of the organization burnt the copy of the Cabinet decision staging protest near the Lakhimpur Medical College campus. Leading the protest, AIDSO State president Projjal Dev set the copy of the Cabinet decision to fire.

The Assam government on November 23 in the Cabinet meeting held in Bongaigaon approved the new school system under the NEP-2020 and to implement it in the State by 2023. The Assam Cabinet decided that the school education structure should be changed from the existing 10+2 to 5+3+3+4. As per the NEP- 2020, 5 years (pre-school) and 3 years (Classes 3,4 & 5) will be under the Directorate of Elementary Education, 3 years (Classes 6, 7 & 8) and 4 years (Classes 9, 10, 11 & 12) will be under the Directorate of Education. The change will come into effect from 2023.

During the demonstration, the AIDSO State president said that the decision was taken by completely ignoring the opposition of the academicians, intellectual figures, historians of the nation to the NEP-2020. "This policy is nothing but a blueprint for the commercialization and privatization of education. The process of bringing the elementary education under Anganwadi centres without adequate infrastructure as per the proposed policy means destruction of the academic foundation of the children. It will encourage new rising of private schools," he alleged.

While staging the protest, the protesters shouted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the alleged anti-public NEP-2020, not to introduce semester system from ninth standard, not to demean the value and importance of the HSLC exam, not to introduce four year long degree courses, not to pave the way to hand over the education sector to native and foreign corporates.
