AIUDF Chief Ajmal pledges to reopen Madrassas in Assam if votes to power

Hatsingmari: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal promised that if voted to power, he will ensure that all Madrasas across Assam will be reopened. This is the decision that he will take in the very first meeting after his government is formed.

Ajmal's comments came in the backdrop of the Assam government making the announcement that all government-run Madrasas of Assam will be shut. Ajmal was speaking at a rally at Hatsingmari in South Salmara district of Assam. He also assured that all distress and deprivation of the tribes and communities of Assam including the tea tribe shall be addressed, all in one cabinet meeting.

Ajmal said that Assam finance, health, education and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is scared of the Congress-AIUDF alliance. He also challenged Sarma to stop him from reopening the Madrasas once AIUDF comes to power.

The education minister had justified his decision of shutting down government-run Madrasas by saying that the teaching of the Quran cannot be funded by government money and if the government does so then it cannot be in favour of one religion. A letter to the director of secondary education was sent stating that 148 madrassa contractual teachers would be shifted to schools under general secondary education.

Assam has about 614 government-run madrassas, including 57 for girls, 3 for boys and 554 co-educational with 17 being Urdu-medium.

The AIUDF president is currently on a two-day political trip to South Salmara district of Assam which has a strong minority vote count. It is believed that AIUDF has extended its alliance with Congress and is gearing up to contest the upcoming 2021 assembly election.
