LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Thursday staged protest in North Lakhimpur town demanding immediate rehabilitation of the landless people of Laika and Dodhia villages situated under Dibru Saikhuwa National Park of Tinsukia district, flood and erosion affected people of the State and for the implementation of the Hari Sankar Brahma Committee report in the State.

In support of the three-fold demands, the political party initiated a 3-hour long sit-in in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. The protesters held a protest meeting in the protest venue. Attending the protest programme, AJP central committee vice-president Haren Chutia, organizing secretary Krishna Das and other leaders became vocal against the State Government regarding the aforementioned issues and called upon the government to resolve the sensitive issues in the real sense without sponsoring politics for the sake of politics.

AJP central committee organizing secretary Krishna Das stated that the State Government should pay priority to rehabilitate the landless people belonging to the indigenous communities as well as the flood and erosion affected people of the State instead of paying priority to rehabilitate the Hindu Bangladeshis.

"But the State Government has been keeping the sensitive issues alive. Moreover, the government has showed no good-will to implement the recommendations of the Hari Sankar Brahma Committee report. The Committee has revealed that the identity and security of the indigenous people of Assam are under threat due to continuous process of illegal Bangladeshi immigration to the State. The Committee has also recommended measures for protecting the land rights of the indigenous people. Despite such circumstances, the State Government has yet not implemented the recommendations of the Hari Sankar Brahma Committee report. We condemn the lackadaisical attitude on the part of the State Government towards implementing the recommendations of the Committee," Krishna Das added.

The party also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur and demanded him to initiate immediate steps to fulfill the three-fold demands. Along with the public, the activists of Lakhimpur, Naoboicha and Bihpuriya constituency committees, regional and branch committees of the party were present in the protest programme.
