Akhil Gogoi Announces Dhairjya Konwar as Raijor Dal's Thowra Candidate

GUWAHATI: Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi announced the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) former leader Dhairjya Konwar as the party's Thowara constituency candidate for the upcoming bye-elections.

Gogoi made this announcement in a press meet, on Thursday. "Dharijya Konwar will be our party's candidate for the upcoming Thowra constituency's by-poll. He was former General Secretary of the KMSS from 2017 to 2011.

Earlier, he practised law at the Gauhati High Court. Relinquishing his lawyer profession, he joined our organization," Gogoi added. Gogoi also said Konwer is an uncompromising jatiyatavadi worker who was arrested during the Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest in 2019. "He was kept behind bars for seven months with me. He is an uncompromising worker," the Raijor Dal president claimed.

Gogoi also slammed Sushanta Borgohain, who won the 2021 assembly election from the Thowra constituency, for joining the BJP. Terming former Borgohain as a betrayer, the Raijor Dal president said, " We supported him in the last elections as we wanted to resist the BJP. He won but joined the ruling party for his own benefit. The coronavirus pandemic has badly hit the economy of the country. Lots of people have been suffering. But he joined the ruling party ignoring the people's plight."

Akhil Gogoi raised questions on Sushanta Borgohain and his contribution to the development of the Thowra region when he served as the parliamentary secretary of his home constituency back in 2011.

The dates for the upcoming by-elections of the Thowra constituency are yet to be declared. In 2021, Sushanta Borgohain of Indian National Congress won the seat by beating Kushal Dowari from Bharatiya Janata Party.
