GUWAHATI:
Akhil Gogoi, the lone Raijor Dal MLA from Sivasagar who was released after being imprisoned for one year and seven months, may find himself behind bars again in connection with the charge sheet filed against him in the Chandmari Police station.
The first hearing on the chargesheet filed against the legislator at the Chandmari Police Station is set for Wednesday before the Gauhati High Court, following which he was released from jail. The NIA court acquitted MLA Akhil Gogoi of all charges against him on July 1st, noting that the accusations made against the MLA lacked evidence.
However, the NIA was dissatisfied with the NIA court's most recent verdict, which freed the Sivasagar MLA on July 1.
Prior to today's 3rd Assembly meeting, Akhil Gogoi alerted the media about the possibility of his imprisonment.
The Raijor Dal leader further said that everything was arranged by the BJP, namely CM Sarma and Home Minister of India Amit Shah, who had never wanted Akhil to be released from jail.
Akhil Gogoi further encouraged the people of Assam to assist him in his time of need and to be aware that the Assam government is attempting to imprison the leader and that he may be arrested at any time.
On May 2, 2021, peasant leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi made history by becoming the first Assamese prisoner to win an assembly election. Under exceptional circumstances, he took his oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Sivasagar seat on May 21.
Gogoi was jailed on December 12, 2019 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on accusations of sedition, terrorism, and violence, which many think was a retaliation from the BJP-led government to Gogoi's massive rally against the disputed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam.
The Sivasagar MLA is currently out of prison after serving a one-year, seven-month sentence, but his future out of jail seem to be shaky for the time being.
