AKRSU demands early formation of Kamatapur autonomous council in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: The All Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) on Sunday said that they were hopeful of the creation of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council (KAC) as early as possible. A grand mass gathering was held at Dimalgaon in Kokrajhar on Sunday under the aegis of AKRSU, demanding early creation of the Kamatapur Autonomous Council. Hundreds of people coming from various districts of lower Assam gathered in the field and shouted slogans for the creation of the new council. The gathering was also attended by leaders of Koch Rajbongshi Mahila Samity, Chilarai Sena, Koch Rajbongshi National Convention, AASAA and others.

Talking to reporters, the advisor of AKRSU, Hiteswar Barman said that the leaders of all factions of AKRSU had become united for the cause. He said they had been demanding the creation of Kamatapur state and inclusion of Koch Rajbongshi in the ST list but the BJP-led government had been systematically delaying it. He said the BJP had assured to fulfill their demands but failed to do so.

Barman said the Government of India had signed another peace accord with the movement groups of the Bodos and similarly, the Government of India should create the KAC as well.

The former president of the AKRSU, Biswajit Ray said the Koch Rajbongshis had become united for the greater interest of the community. He said the government had failed to fulfill its promise to Koch Rajbongshis. Ray said the Government of India had brought another accord with the Bodos keeping other ethnic communities in the dark. He said the governments of India and Assam should bring the bill for KAC in the ensuing budget session of the State or they would be compelled to launch democratic movement. The program was also attended by the president of AASAA, Stephen Lakra, and others.
