HOJAI: Hundreds of members of All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU), Hojai district committee, demonstrated against mob lyncing and moral policing at district headquarter Srimanta Sankardev Nagar in Hojai on Monday. After the demonstration, the AAMSU members submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, Hojai district.
Through this memorandum, AAMSU brought to attention an alleged disturbing trend of mob violence and moral policing targeting Muslim youths in Hojai town. The memorandum stated that on August 9, two youths, Muzibur Rahman and another individual, were brutally attacked by a group of miscreants while celebrating a colleague’s birthday at Hojai New Market.
The victims were seriously injured and are currently undergoing treatment at Hojai Civil Hospital. Although a case has been registered and the main accused has been arrested, other accused individuals remain at large. The incident has been captured on video and has gone viral on social media, clearly showing the attackers. In the memorandum, the AAMSU members mentioned that despite the Supreme Court’s directive in WP(C) No. 754/2016 (Tehseen S. Poonawalla Vs Union of India & ORS.) on July 17, 2018, to take strict action against those involved in mob lynching and violence, no concrete steps had been taken against the perpetrators. The memorandum also stated that previously too, AAMSU tried to bring to the notice of Hojai district administration the incidents of attacks on a mentally challenged youth named Taz Uddin on May 25, 2025, and another Muslim youth in Bishnupally on July 28,2025.
In the memorandum, AAMSU claimed that at night, some youths gathered at various spots in Hojai town, consume liquor and other intoxicants, and target people, especially Muslims, with physical attacks and false accusations. They also allegedly targeted passengers at the railway station, taking advantage of the solitude. The AAMSU also said that furthermore, some youths harassed female students at coaching centers in the evening, but that due to fear of reputation damage, no one reports these incidents.
Through the memorandum, they demanded the Hojai district police to identify and arrest all the accused involved in the attack on Muzibur Rahman and the other individual, arrest those who attacked Taz Uddin, take control of mob lynching and moral policing incidents in Hojai district, ensure the safety and security of every citizen in Hojai town and district, and take strict action against those involved in mob lynching and violence, as per the Supreme Court’s directive.
Notably, the copy of the memorandum was further forwarded to the Chief Minister of Assam, Director General of Police, Assam, Home Secretary, Government of Assam.
