DIBRUGARH: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has opposed the construction of a coal depot at Namrup railway station in Dibrugarh.
The residents of Namrup have already written a letter to the Divisional Railway Manager, NF Railway against construction of a coal depot at Namrup Railway station. The NF Railways is constructing a railway track at Namrup Railway station to transport the coal through goods trains.
Talking to The Sentinel, Dibrugarh district AASU general secretary Aboni Kumar Gogoi said, "We warned the Railways to stop the construction of coal depot at Namrup railway station because schools are just 100 metres away from the Railway station and if the coal depot is set up there will be pollution and this will affect the health of children."
"We have already informed the local MLA and other ministers about the matter and asked them to intervene and to stop the construction of the coal depot," Gogoi added. "The land is Railway property but they cannot construct a coal depot there because it will create pollution. They can construct it in other areas. We have no problem if they construct the coal depot in other areas."
