KOKRAJHAR: In a series of agitation, All-Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Kokrajhar Anchalik Committee in association with Kokrajhar Government College unit ABSU staged a one hour sit-in demonstration in front of Kokrajhar Government College on Monday demanding immediate removal of Vice Chancellor of Bodoland University (BU) Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh. The Professor was arrested on corruption charges by CM’s Vigilance Cell and Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption. The activists of ABSU shouted slogans against the VC of BU in front of the entrance gate of Kokrajhar Government College.

Joining the sit-in protest, the president of Kokrajhar district committee ABSU Kripesh Daimary said the students’ body has been demanding immediate removal of Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh for being accused in corruption charges but neither the Chancellor nor the State government has taken action against Singh for the reasons best known to them. He said the inquiry against the VC of BU Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh, was being underway but despite this fact the arrested person has resumed office from August 31 on pre-arrest bail. He said Singh had been sent to leave till August 30 and ABSU vehemently opposed his return to the office at BU for being an arrested accused.

Daimary said the ABSU will not compromise on maligning the good images of the Bodoland University, the only premier higher educational institution of Bodoland region and lower Assam and thus ABSU wants appointment of new VC for BU by removing the existing VC.

Singh was being accused on corruption charges by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption and CM’s Vigilance Cell vide case no. 01/2022 U/S 120B/420/409 IPC R/W Sec. 13(a)/13(2) of PC Act, 1988) and this case is a clear evidence that Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh has been accused of and charged under IPC 120(b) as an offence of criminal conspiracy, 420, cheating with dishonesty and 409, criminal breach of trust as a public servant with corruption charges under section 13(a)/13(2) of Prevention of Corruption of Act. 1988. On August 22, the Additional Chief Secretary of Assam for Higher Education and chairman of high-level enquiry committee- Biswaranjan Samal visited BU with the purpose of investigation into corruption charges. ABSU delegation met Samal in BU and cautioned that they will resist the further joining of accused Vice Chancellor of BU Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh in the university after August 31.

The president of KDC, ABSU said though he had obtained pre-arrest bail, it cannot be ruled out from the suspicion that if he is in office may do the act of criminal conspiracy and try to hide the evidence against the charges levied on him, he said and added, “Since the case being prejudice and under investigation by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption and CM’s Vigilance Cell (Case no. 01/2022 U/S 120B/420/409 IPC R/W Sec. 13(a)/13(2) of PC Act, 1988), ABSU wants removal of Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh from the position of Vice Chancellor of BU as he will bring down the fame of a prestigious position of Bodoland University.”

The Education Secretary of ABSU Swmaoshar Basumatary said the students of the affiliated colleges of BU never get the result of BU semester examinations in time and textbooks are not made available on time. He also said there were many basic problems including academic related issues in BU but the VC was not keen to solve the problems of the varsity.
