GUWAHATI: Keeping speculations at bay, Congress has denied reports of All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev's resignation amid internal tensions over the seat-sharing arrangement with the AIUDF for Assam Assembly polls.

Earlier in the day various reports circulated wherein it has been stated that Dev has resigned from the party as she was unhappy with the seat-sharing strategy between the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in Barak Valley for the upcoming Assembly elections.

However, denying such claims the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee APCC maintained that she is a "very indispensable part" of the Congress and has not resigned from the party.

Congress MP from Nagaon Pradyut Bordoloi also rubbished the reports and said: "She is very much with us. She is a very indispensable part of Congress. She is a very respected leader of our party."

"It has been brought to the notice of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee that a speculative news about resignation of President, All India Mahila Congress Ms Sushmita Dev is doing the rounds on television and web portals. We want to make it clear that Ms Sushmita Dev has not resigned from the party," party spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharma said in a statement.

The Congress party has been engaged with the seat sharing strategy along with its alliance parties including AIUDF, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha.

Also known as the Congress-led grand alliance or the 'Mahajoot' , the party have recently been backed by the Hagrama Mohiliary led the Bodo People's Front BPF which represents one of the largest tribal communities in Assam.

In an effort to give a tough fight to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress is leaving no stone unturned to regain its lost power in the state.

While it prepares for the poll, the party has been targeting the saffron party with the anti-CAA sentiments in the state, thereafter expanding its grip it has stitched an alliance with six parties against the BJP.
