Amit Shah asks Assam govt to seek legal expertise on Clause 6 panel report

New Delhi: Union home minister Amit Shah urged Assam government to engage legal experts and constitutional experts to examine the Clause 6 panel's recommendations for implementation of provisions of Clause 6 of Assam Accord.

Shah also asked the state government to prepare the report on granting scheduled tribe (ST) status to six communities of the state within one month.

The Home Minister's directives came within hours of the meeting between him and Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance, Health and Education Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi on Sunday.

"The demand of six communities for ST status was discussed. The home minister instructed to prepare and send the report of the state government's group of ministers within next one month," Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said earlier after the meeting.

During the meeting, the issues of implementation of the Bodo Peace Accord was also discussed.

It is to be mentioned that Clause 6 provides for constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese origin people. The high level committee set up by the Home Ministry had submitted the report in February this year to the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal but since then there has been no action on the recommendations of the report. AASU, who too has been part of the high level committee, had made the report public at a recent meeting of theirs.
