GUWAHATI: The Asam Sahitya Sabha has introduced significant reforms for its 2025-27 executive committee, including the adoption of a 'One Person, One Post' policy and 33 per cent reservation for women.

Addressing the media at Danbir Radha Kanta Handique Bhawan within the Sabha’s central office on Tuesday, newly elected Sabha president Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami announced the reforms, which aim to ensure greater transparency and inclusivity within the organisation.

Dr. Goswami explained that under the 'One Person, One Post' policy, no individual will hold more than one position within the Sabha. Additionally, members of the same family cannot occupy multiple posts. He emphasized that these measures stem from resolutions passed during the 77th biennial conference of the Sabha, held from February 1 to 5 at Pathsala in Bajali district.

Highlighting the importance of gender inclusivity, Dr. Goswami stated that 33 per cent of the seats in the new executive committee are reserved for women. "The reservation for women is expected to provide them with a stronger voice in the Sabha’s decision-making process," he remarked.

He further informed that members who previously held executive committee posts but failed to submit financial accounts for events within 25 days of their conclusion have been excluded from the new committee. Additionally, underperforming or inactive members, as well as those facing allegations of financial irregularities or other charges, have not been appointed.

In another key decision, office secretaries have been appointed for all branch offices across Assam. Each branch secretary will now be selected from the district where the branch is located. Furthermore, individuals holding prominent positions in any community, tribal, or political organisation, such as president, vice-president, or secretary, are ineligible for the new executive committee. However, general members of such bodies are not barred from participating.

Dr. Goswami also announced that future executive meetings will be streamlined to a single-day format instead of the previous two-day structure. As part of a modern approach to the Sabha’s traditions, the practice of presenting customary gifts like gamusas to executive members will be discontinued. Instead, books will be given as tokens of appreciation.

The Sabha president also released the list of secretaries appointed to branch offices across the state and confirmed that the first executive meeting of the new committee will be held on March 9 at the Sabha’s central office in Guwahati.
