LAKHIMPUR: Finally, Lakhimpur MLA and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) central committee general secretary Utpal Dutta initiated stir against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) on Saturday.

The AGP MLA organized two-hour-long ‘Gana Abasthan’ in association with party workers at North Lakhimpur Government Boys’ HS School playground opposing the Act. The AGP activists of the 15 regional committees under Lakhimpur LAC, who recently resigned from the party expressing resentment against the central committee AGP leaders for supporting the Act, took part in the stir. By staging the protest, the MLA demanded the Union Government scrap the Act.

Birendra Prashad Baishya, the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the Parliament) MP from AGP, cast his vote in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. In the wake of this development, Utpal Dutta had to face severe criticism from the protesters of the Act which compelled him to declare his stand by breaking his long silence in the issue. A few days ago, the MLA of the regional party, through a press release sent to media, declared that he had opposed the CAA. In the press release, he stated, “This Act (CAA) will destroy the existence of the Assamese community, its language, and culture. The proposed Bill (CAB) was opposed in the meeting of the Sadharan Parishad of the party (AGP). The community destructive Bill will violate the spirit of the Assam Accord.”
