DIBRUGARH: A 10-month-old child has been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh. Routine testing at the Lahowal ICMR-RMRC facility confirmed the diagnosis.
Providing details, AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan said, "The child was admitted four days back with symptoms of a common cold. The virus was detected yesterday after conducting a standard test." Dr. Bhuyan said that since 2014, AMCH has sent samples to ICMR for testing whenever such cases surfaced.
The superintendent assured that the child was stable and under medical supervision. He clarified that HMPV is a common respiratory virus primarily affecting children under the age of five. "There is no cause for concern," he added.
Recently, through research conducted in one of the major national institutes JIPMER-Puducherry, it was found that Human Metapneumovirus has been in India for decades and even evolved over time. It also has a relation with the condition of respiratory infection found in the younger ones, so there arises a specific need to treat them early.
The diagnosis of HMPV in Dibrugarh underlines the awareness of respiratory infections in children and the role of routine testing in early detection. AMCH is closely observing the condition of the child and providing the needed care, and reassurance to the public that the virus is not rare, and with timely intervention, it can be handled very well.
