Assam: 3 years elapsed; Kandarpa Barman murder remains unsolved

NALBARI: Three years after the sensational murder of Kandarpa Barman, an Assam Agitation leader, noted social worker, and BJP leader from Sholmara in Nalbari district, the case remains unsolved, with no accused identified or arrested. The prolonged lack of progress has once again raised serious questions over the status of the investigation and the effectiveness of the probe.

Kandarpa Barman went missing on the evening of August 4, 2023. The following day, his WagonR car and a pair of sandals were recovered from the bank of the Morapagladiya river at Gowardal, triggering widespread concern across the district. On August 6, 2023, his body was recovered from a forested area near Mathauri, confirming fears that he had been murdered.

The incident had sparked widespread outrage across Nalbari and other parts of Assam. Political parties, social organisations, former Assam Agitation activists, and locals had staged protests, demanding the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible. The case attracted significant public attention, and the police had launched an investigation from multiple angles.

However, despite the passage of three years, the investigation has not led to the identification or arrest of any suspect. No conclusive breakthrough has been made public, leaving Barman’s family, supporters, and locals disappointed and seeking answers.

Residents and civil society members have expressed concern over the apparent lack of visible progress in one of the district’s most high-profile murder cases.

Many have urged the authorities to intensify the investigation using modern forensic techniques and other scientific methods to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
