Assam: 32 Buffaloes Seized From BG Yard Bamunimaidam In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The railway police on Thursday seized a herd of 32 buffaloes from BG Yard Bamunimaidam in Guwahati city. Reports are that the buffaloes have been brought to Guwahati from New Delhi by train. 

According to reports, the buffaloes were brought to Assam from a dairy farm in West Nagali in the Janakpuri neighborhood in New Delhi under AK Mandal Enterprise. 

Notably, the buffaloes were being loaded in a truck bearing registration number AS 01 NC 4826 when the railway police caught them red-handed and seized the buffaloes from their possession. 

Meanwhile, the railway police have launched an investigation into the smuggling of buffaloes from New Delhi and are questioning the truck driver about the details. 

As Durga Puja is approaching which witnesses the sacrifice of buffaloes across many "Devalayas" in Assam, these buffaloes may have been brought for this purpose as the population of buffaloes in Assam is negligible when compared to cows and most of these buffaloes are only second preference in Assam if cows are not available, unlike other states where buffaloes are used for heavy work like plowing the field and cows are reared for their milk.

In Assam, cows are reared for doing both the jobs of plowing the field and providing milk. So buffaloes generally are smuggled to Assam and then travel to border countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. 

Smuggling of buffaloes to and fro from Assam is not new as a few months ago in March security forces and local police in Silchar intercepted a truck after receiving input about illegal cattle smuggling and were successful in seizing 20 buffaloes near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Katigora in Cachar district. 

The truck driver after being questioned was unable to show any kind of documentation regarding the cattle and also the vehicle registration was not updated.
