GUWAHATI: In what could be termed as an example of government apathy and snail pace of developmental works, a bridge over the Aie River in Bongaigaon is yet to be completed even 10 years after starting its construction works.

According to the local people, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone of bridge connecting two Lower Assam districts, Bongaigaon and Barpeta over the Aie River on January 23, 2011.

The estimated cost of the bridge was Rs. 40 core 44 lakh. Surprisingly, the respective department has not taken adequate steps for completing the construction works of the bridge that could greatly help people of both districts.

Local people alleged that the concerned department has not followed proper scientific method and procedure in the construction of the bridge, that would connect Borghola of Bongaigaon with Kalgasia of Barpeta once completed. For such apathy of the department, the construction work remains incomplete.

Meanwhile, the Aie River has changed its course which created a hindrance in completing the remaining construction works of the bridge. The local people demanded the government to take steps to ascertain that which cause the delay in the construction of the bridge.

" We are still to use riverways. The government did not pay heed to our sorrows and miseries," some local people said.

Due to the completion of this bridge connecting the Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts.
