DHUBRI: A 63-year-old person has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a special court in Dhubri district of Assam for raping a minor girl.

The convict identified as Amjad Ali has been charged under various sections of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The POCSO Court delivered the verdict and awarded the quantum of sentence after carefully hearing the case.

The convict who allegedly raped the 9-year-old took advantage of the situation when her family was away. It is also informed that Amjad Ali threatened her not to disclose about the heinous act before anyone. The victim is a resident of Tamarhat town in Dhubri district.

Special Public Prosecutor for the case Uttam Kumar Sarkar said that the minor was raped by Ali when she was washing clothes and there was no one was at her house. Ali then forcibly took the victim to his residence and committed the heinous act.

Later, garnering courage the 9-year-old shared about the incident with her family who along with their neighbours filed a complaint at the Tamarhat Police Station.

Based on that complaint, the Police registered a case (No-11/2022 U/S- 376 AB IPC R/W Sec 6 of POCSO Act) against Ali and the matter was investigated. Upon investigation, the charge sheet was filed against him under POCSO Act and later it was registered as a Special Case in the current year.

Additional Sessions Judge cum Special Judge (POCSO) Polly Katoki in her verdict on Wednesday said, "In the instant case, the convict-accused has raped a young minor girl who was helpless, defenceless, vulnerable and an easy prey."

Meanwhile, as per the verdict, besides a life imprisonment, the convict was also slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000. In addition to that, a penalty of additional six months imprisonment has also been levied upon the accused under Section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012.
