Assam: 70 kg Cannabis Seized In Third Major Bust

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police on Monday confiscated a cannabis shipment weighing more than 70 kilogrammes and detained two people in yet another significant seizure, according to officials.

Initial reports state that an operation was conducted at the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in the Betkuchi neighbourhood of Guwahati based on specific tips from the Guwahati Police.

After the operation, Guwahati Police officers reported that the total weight of the marijuana seized was approximately 77 kg.

According to Guwahati Police, the cannabis that was confiscated is worth roughly Rs 7 lakhs on the international narcotics market. Officials also disclosed that the cannabis shipment had been brought into the country illegally from Tripura in a goods truck with its contents hidden underneath the seats.

The Guwahati Police detained the truck's driver and co-pilot to question them over smuggling allegations.

The two Tripura residents who were detained by the police during the operation in Guwahati were named Babul Biswas and Haradhan Hrishi Das. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Satendra Singh Hazari of the Garchuk Police Station oversaw the operation.

The truck that was used to smuggle the shipment in was taken into custody. Its licence plates read TR 01 AU 1894. One of the defendants, Babul Biswas, responded when questioned by reporters: "We brought the cannabis from Agartala, and it was scheduled to be delivered here in Guwahati."

“Below our seats, we had packed the consignment. We didn't receive specific delivery instructions for the shipment. Behind this network of smugglers are our masters. We merely carry out their instructions," said the imprisoned Biswas.

It should be highlighted that the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Guwahati busted two significant attempts to smuggle cannabis on consecutive days at the Guwahati Train Station.

On March 24, GRP officers boarded Rajdhani express train 20503, arriving from Dimapur and stopping at the Guwahati Railway Station on its way to Delhi, and discovered approximately 83 kg of cannabis inside. According to a police official, the value of the cannabis cargo that was confiscated was believed to be around Rs 40 lakhs.
